In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, I am speaking to ex Professional Footballer, Paul Robinson and current Professional Footballers, James Coppinger and Romain Vincelot. It's been on my radar for a long time to get some current football players on the podcast to discuss their thoughts on sports science, how it has affected, or not affected their career and what we can do better as practitioners. In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast I am speaking to Sophia Nimphius, Brian Gearity and Lorena Torres about the barriers encountered by females in strength & conditioning. Sophia is a Professor at Edith Cowen University and has featured on the podcast before chatting about change of direction, however this is an area that she is extremely passionate about and in this episode provides some stories that really shocked and disappointed me about our industry. Lorena Torres is Performance Director at the Philadelphia 76ers and, like Sophia provides an incredible insight into what its like being a female in such a male-dominated industry such as strength and conditioning. Brian is a Director of Online Sports Degrees at the University of Denver and recently co-authors the book, 'Understanding Strength and Conditioning as Sport Coaching: Bridging the Biophysical, Pedagogical and Sociocultural Foundations of Practice' so is well versed in this area. This is a great listen but be ready for some uncomfortable truths.

I wanted to interview a practitioner who was using force plates really effectively in a collegiate setting and after speaking to Eric Reneghan, he said that Lauren was my guy! After spending some time in the NBA, Lauren is now at the University of California, San Diego and speaks about his philosopher around the use of force plates. Lauren goes into some depth of how he uses this technology but more importantly, he discusses the why.

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast I am speaking to Owner of Spellman Performance, Les Spellman. With the NFL back up and running I thought it would be a perfect time to get a guest on the podcast who prepares these athletes for the coming months. Les is an absolute gun but I threw something a little bit different at him for this episode. We went through three hypothetical athletes, all of which most coaches will have come across in their careers, with Les giving his take on how he would improve their sprint performance. This week’s Pacey Performance Podcast sees me speak to Rugby Australia’s Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach, John Pryor, who has worked with the Wallabies, the Japanese national Rugby Union team and holds a master’s degree in health science. With his background in track and field and combat sports, John has an incredibly wide-ranging knowledge about strength and conditioning, contextual strength and coordination training.
John explains his background and his influences, which include Warren Young and Charles Poliquin, Vern Gambetta, Eddie Jones and Vern Gambetta. He also talks about his time working with Eddie Jones in Japan, and the point of difference for coaches who are taken seriously and seen as authentic by athletes and employers alike.

On this week’s Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob speaks to performance science consultant Jo Clubb about how she went from starting out in her dream job as an intern at Chelsea FC in the Premier League, to eventually working in the NHL with the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. Jo also discusses what she calls her ‘sliding doors’ moment – when she got the opportunity to move to the US and work in ice hockey followed by American football. Through this, we talk about how opportunities can arise via the power of networking in a close-knit industry, and what younger people in the industry can do to grow their profile.
A running theme throughout this episode is how training and sports science isn’t always about the techniques, drills and exercises a coach introduces to a new team, but how a cultural fit can make the difference through connecting with athletes on a personal level.
