Thursday Aug 18, 2016
Thursday Aug 18, 2016
Almost 18 months after the last roundtable podcast I did, in this episode we have our third, the Special 'Youth Football' Edition featuring Paul Bower (Barnsley FC), Luke Jenkinson (Sheffield United FC) and Kevin Paxton (Leicester City FC). I loved the previous 2 roundtable podcast I did and have tried to line up a few more over the last few months, but it has proved very difficult with how busy peoples schedules are. So, I am delighted to get these guys on for a chat about youth football and I thank them for their patience and cooperation in making this happen.
In this episode you will learn -
- Who are Paul, Luke and Kevin (background, education and current roles)
- The realities of the EPPP and how it has changed your roles
- Introducing a multisports/games curriculum
- Integrating technology into an academy
- Working on a shoe string budget
- On field fitness with academy players

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast I am chatting to football physiologist at ASPETAR in Qatar, Richard Akenhead. Richard's name often gets brought up when chatting about GPS and load monitoring when I am out and about in my day job. There seems to be a lot of skepticism still around the use of GPS and accelerometers to measure load so I thought it would be pertinent to get an expert on in this area. I would encourage you to check out Richard's research in the link below.
In this episode you will learn -
- Who is Richard Akenhead (background, education and current role)
- Current research with accelerometers for player management & rehab
- Creating the right environment during rehab with regards to constraints and context
- Coaching, the language barrier and making an impact
- Training load monitoring and the dangers of reductionism

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast I am speaking to Head of Sports Science at Southampton Football Club, Alek Gross. Alek has been on my hit list for a while now and with the football off-season I was able to stalk him and get him on for a chat. Alek has an interesting background, coming from rugby league and into football which doesn't happen very often so it was great to get his views on some important issues.
In this episode you will learn -
- How you consistently develop players through the academy
- Maybe a little on biobanding in the academy?
- With the high profile explosive players that have come through the academy and since left, Walcott etc, it would be interesting to hear how you manage them sort of explosive players.
- Maybe how you monitor these guys specifically as well as the other players.
- With your recent forays in Europe it would be cool to discuss how your practice differs with increased fixtures and demand on the players.
- Also, maybe what you have brought over from your rugby days into the football environment.
